Running Diary of a Game That Will Have Absolutely Zero Impact on the AL East Race

Alright I'm busting out a little running diary of the Sox and Yanks tonight. Sox are 5-1 on the year against NY and are up by 10.5 games heading into the series. They don't seem to want to extend that lead because Wily Mo Pena is on the bench tonight. Wang v. Wakefield for your battle of the pitchers, which means Dougie is in the lineup tonight, and Wake has been excellent outside his last start. I benched him in fantasy, part of me expects him to get shelled tonight in one of those "Nothing goes right for Wake and the Yanks are out to show everyone that this race isn't even close to over." I just couldn't risk it.

7:13 Ortiz drew a 2-out walk against Wang. They cut to Papi on first running Mientkiewicz's shoulders. I personally think he was just sizing him up for the chokehold.

7:19 Question posed in the McDonnell house: whats the difference between a reptile and amphibian?...Needless to say none of us have any freakin' clue.

7:20 Johnny Damon steps into the box for the Yanks. What ever happened to the Jesus look? Oh yea thats right he sold out. Slight slip of the mind there, my bad.

7:25 A-Rod just channeled his inner Wily Mo and hit a ball that might have landed on Landsdowne St. You have to give the guy credit. He can hit a 60 mph hanging pitch in the 1st inning of a game in late May. No question he's the MVP of the first 1/3 of the year every year. 2-0 NY after 1. If that HR was a sign of things to come I'm pretty happy i benched Wake tonight.

7:31 Just showed Chazz Palmintieri in the crowd tonight. I think after the game he needs to go interrogate Steinbrenner about the identity of Keyser Soze. Anyone? No? Damn.

7:34 Dougie singles. No doubt he goes 4 for 4 tonight with 2 HRs, then proceeds to call Schilling a homo, throw Pedroia in the shower with his uniform still on, then go home and eat 2 full buckets of KFC while watching Rambo.

7:39 Jeter with a big fat E on a grounder by Lugo. 8 errors on the year so far for Derek. Yea, he shoulda won the Gold Glove last year over Alex Gonzalez. No doubt. Bases loaded with 2 down and Youk is up who's absolutely killing the ball right now. And he goes down swinging on the 3-2 pitch. Wang's getting tough with runners on. First 2 innings he got himself into a jam then pitched his way out. I blame Tito for benching Wily Mo.

7:46 Speaking of Wily Mo I feel the need to quickly address something from Greech's last post. He said something along the lines of Arroyo has "flourished in Cincinnatti." Greech I dunno what your definition of flourished is, but if it means winning 10 games before the All-Star break, and finishing with 14 on the year then yes, he has DEFINITELY flourished.

7:47 And my rant is interrupted by Giambi hitting a 975 foot HR off Wake. Have to give him credit, he looked very poised at the plate. Excellent concentration. Just a great pure hitter. I'm sure that homer had nothing to do with the 10 years of steroids. Cano follows with a liner into right-field that Drew just missed coming up with on a great diving effort....Trot woulda had it....thats all im saying.

7:50 Quick AIM exchange for you. Apparently Wily Mo took a line drive in the head on Saturday during the game:

lilchika63 (7:48:39 PM): yeah i can't find a video, it happened on saturday
lilchika63 (7:48:57 PM): he was sitting in the dugout and a foul ball came right in and smacked him on the forehead
HeyUmp47 (7:48:58 PM): lemme gueess....he thought it was nothing more than a mosquito and barely reacted
lilchika63 (7:50:21 PM): i don't think he would've noticed if the trainer hadn't run right up to him

Guy's a freak of nature. Little known fact; he actually has an album in the Dominican Republic titled "K or HR: That's how I roll" that did 10 times the sales of Arroyo's. True story.

7:56 Hideki Matsui just came up to the plate with the Entourage theme as his entrance music. Not sure if I just gained respect for Matsui or if I just started to hate Entourage. He flies out to CF to end the inning. 4-0 NY after 2.

8:01 Clips from an interview with Posada about Wang. If I could put anyone in the ankle lock it would definitely be Posada. Greech really liked the time that Jorge's kid came out with him during the starting lineup introductions didn't ya buddy?

8:04 Sox go down 1-2-3 in the top of the 3rd. Wang looks like he's really starting to hit his stride. Can we have Tavarez try and talk to him like he does to Dice-K and see if that will piss Wang off so much that he loses focus? Can't you just see it; while incessantly tapping him on the shoulder, "Hey Wang, Wang, hey Wang, hey Wang, did you see my start the other day? Huh? Did ya? Do you throw your slider like this or like that? Huh? Cuz I throw mine like this. Hey how come you say it like Wong and not like Wang? Seriously how come?"

8:13 A conversation between Remy and Orsillo about Manny's hair ends with Orsillo saying "He's never boring." I don't think there's any better way to describe Manny. Except maybe "on another planet."

8:15 A-Rod gets gunned down trying to steal 3rd with a lefty at the plate and Dougie's cannon arm. Personally I think he was just lonely out on the bases and missed Jeter too much. That whole 5 minutes they spent more than 90 feet away from each other way too much for him to handle.

8:18 Cano grounds out to Cora at 2nd to end the inning. Starting to look like Pedroia's status as "starting 2nd baseman" is pretty much a thing of the past. Can't really argue it at this point, Cora has been beyond solid.

8:35 Pretty uneventful stretch of baseball going on. It's kinda making me think about getting metal legs. It's a risky operation, but it'd be worth it. Damon singled, stole 2nd, then took 3rd on a sac fly where Crisp did his best Johnny Damon impression and didn't come within 25 feet of the infield dirt on his throw. Inning ends, 4-0 NY after 4.

8:38 If you ever need to kill a couple hours, I highly recommend Guitar Heroes. Never misses, especially when you have an uncoordinated moron who can't figure the damn game out and hits one note out of every 10 (I won't name names, but I'm pretty much talking about myself).

8:44 Youk continues to hit the crap outta the ball and drives one over Matsui's head. I might have to see the replay cuz I'm 95% sure that for the first time in his Yankee tenure, Matsui's hat didn't fly off after he took 2 steps. FYI, Youk leads the league with 25, 2-strike hits, and currently is on a 14-game hitting streak. Why did I hear rumors of us going after Helton again??

8:47 Papi drives one down into the RF corner, Youk scores, and Papi dives headfirst into 2nd causing Jeter to shit his pants and bobble the throw. Yanks call timeout so A-Rod can give him a hug and tell him it was just a bad dream. 4-1. Here come the Sox.

8:52 IM from Greech:

DAwwG275 (8:51:44 PM): heres something that might be useful you can use..."noone wants to read a running diary of a game between a team that is 10.5 games ahead of another team in which the two starting pitchers are tim wakefield and chien ming wang bc they are two very boring pitchers and wily mo isnt playing to add comic relief" -Greech

In case you missed it last week, Greech is still currently suspended from the Hub. I have also hired Dwight K. Schrute to get to the bottom of the rumors of Greech's steroid usage. But he's right. Not my best choice of a game for a running diary. Hindsight's a bitch.

8:59 ESPN just reported that George Steinbrenner has painted his office black. When asked why he did it, Steinbrenner replied "to intimidate my subordinates."

9:05 Wake just walked Giambi on his 100th pitch of the night, and it's only the 5th. They just showed J.C. Romero getting loose in the 'pen. TRANSLATION: We're just gonna go on cruise control 'til tomorrow night when we put the most insane member of our staff on the mound and hope that the uncomfortable shots of him and Manny cuddling in the dugout will freak everyone out.

9:10 A Robinson Cano triple puts the Yanks up 6-1 after 5.

9:15 Looks like after the top of 6 this is going to become a battle of the awful bullpens. The Yanks have no one, and the Sox have no one until the 8th and 9th when Okie and Pap take over. Thankfully it's Monday and I'm a 23 year old loser that still watches wrestling.

9:26 I'm calling it quits early on this diary. Boring game. Greech was right shoulda saved this for something better. Ah well, live and learn.

9:33 Game just picked up a bit so I'll stick around for a few more minutes. Bases loaded, 2 outs for Abreu, who has been a gigantic disappointment for the Yanks, and a pleasant surprise for the Sox. Abreu grounds out to end the threat. I don't know who's more shocked; Yanks fans cuz Abreu choked again, or Sox fans cuz someone not named Okajima or Papelbon got out of a jam unscathed. Let's call it a push and call it a night.

Hope you enjoyed the Running Diary of a Half Game. Sorry to my 3 loyal readers. I'll make it up soon with my "Full Defense of Wily Mo" column that's due out very soon. Feel free to send us some feedback at thesportshub@gmail.com

Flourished - verb - 44 starts, 16 wins, 3.15 era, 1.19 whip, 1 allstar appearance, 1 hit album, corn rows on a white guy....priceless.

pro·di·gious–adjective 1. extraordinary in size, amount, extent, degree, force, etc. (your welcome, danny)

so we're just gonna ignore the fact that 10 of his 16 wins came in the first half of the '06 season? i suck at math but im pretty sure that means over 50% of his wins came in the first 3 months of his cincy tenure...

and dude an all-star appearance??? i think an appearance on The Inferno woulda been at least 10 times as impressive...

and bro if u were smart at all u woulda brought up his sudden ability to hit the longball....huge oversight on ur part

come on danny, even someone like you knows its not his fault if his team cant score runs for him. If they only had someone who could hit the long ball....
