Wow I never thought I would watch a moment again that could even be mentioned in the same breath as Ted Williams on the field before the 1999 All-Star Game. But MLB managed to pull off something comparable.
If you missed the All-Star Game opening ceremony with Willie Mays, do yourself a favor and find the video online. Amazing. I still have chills. And speaking of Teddy Ballgame, Mays was introduced with a quote from Ted; "The All-Star Game was created for Willie Mays." Doesn't get much cooler than that
It started with Willie coming out of the centerfield gate while a picture of "The Catch" was presented in a wall bigger than a movie screen. Willie walked towards the infield with Barry Bonds right behind him, followed by the rest of the '07 All Stars. They actually did the ceremonial first pitch as a throw from centerfield from Willie Mays. Serious chills. Imagine being Jose Reyes and having the chance to catch that throw. Reyes then had Willie sign the ball for him. What a souvenir that is.
Then they had Willie ride around the field in a pink cadillac tossing balls into the crowd. I'm almost tearing up just re-living this through print. What a moment. Kudos to Bud Selig and MLB.
